Glad you posted that actually I think I will need to do the lift outside..I was planning on in a shed but I think roof space is too limited judging by home much the lift needs to come up by. Is removing the intake really necessary ? I have seen folk doing it without but the chains on the W pipe did worry me.

Do you mean the inlet ? I took mine out without removing anything off the engine, just split it from the box, it came out pretty easily...

Any estimates of the chassis weight ?

I was wondering about putting it on a set of roof bars to save me renting a trailer 3 times. 120 KG is the limit keeping in mind what I have lifted so far I cant see it been that much.

As mec says, no need to remove the intake manifold or anything before lifting. I had mine partially stripped beforehand checking and searching for the head gasket leak...

When I got mine galvanised I think I remember it was circa 95-100kg, some where in that ball park.

It begins (spot any issues)?
Image

First lift failed as I had the flaming Leveller on side to side so it would let me jiggle it not tip it.... LOL live and learn.

I popped the W PIPE off as I wasn't happy with the weight getting put on it.

Up she comes
Image

Double check all ok
Image

Tada !
Image

All in all a piece of cake, so much easier with no body to worry about bashing. When the transmission came out it swung a little and brushed the chassis. No biggie but I thought ouch that would have been a rear window gone or scratched stainless if the rest of the car was there.

One of the engine mounts was a bit stubborn whilst been loose it wouldn't release for a while but in the end it came.

I would highly recommend not splitting the transmission it was so much easier and I look forward to putting it back in.

With the engine removed, onto the yard for some serious photos, labelling and undoing.

Image

This is the plate welded onto the bottom. One of the main reasons I wanted to tackle the chassis was knowing of its existence.

Image

Fuel tank area doesnt look too bad, just some epoxy coming off but again clearly visible is the fact rust is there and into the epoxy coating. The box section at the back as well so I am so glad I am doing this and not just lashing paint/waxoil on to let it seep further into the frame.

Image

Underneath doesn't look too bad.

Image

Certainly had its share of bumpy lifts in the past.

Image

Transmission assembly coming out. I did think this bit was bent sub normally but looking at the original part it also has a bend on the end.

Image

Loving this nut and bolt hand drilled at the time of manufacture.

Image

Fuel accumulator was fiddly, hats off to anyone who has managed to do this without ramps and poor access.

Image

As you can see the rubber has perished off these hoses fully, methinks I might be adding a new pair to the list.

Image

On the question of galvanising, if I need to re-thread all holes how in gods name would you get in here with such impossible access.

Image

All done.

Fingers crossed off to pro-dip this evening. I did get a set of roof bars which have been load tested to 150KG but I am not chancing it. It feels far too heavy for a roof, maybe if I had the Land Rover going but with it full length rack and spread even load but on 4 single points of roof bars it feels wrong.

At least I can use the Bricks/Wood/Hoist/Leveller for the Landy lift off next year following a similar vein.

I have given Alex the heads up I am hoping by the end of the week/weekend to have it to him and will post more pics. Interesting will be the first pics post pro strip and when he takes the welded panel off.

Thanks Mec, Yeahh that was my thinking as well, but there are so many places where the epoxy has broken down I am still glad I have done it. I think it will need the front frame extension fully replacing and some serious patching there which is a chassis off job anyway I am thinking.

Not to mention the piece of cake element of replacing hoses, shocks etc which is now a synch for what in reality doesn't feel like a whole load of work.

Just the fact I caught the rear trailing arms (loose nuts and bent bolts) makes me so happy, Surprised the MOT didn't pick that up.

I now face the "must make everything shiny" syndrome and can see myself taking springs etc to be blasted and painted.
