The one car that springs to mind that just went for £24k was bought for about £15k about 6(?) years ago. I have no data on the other high value ones, but clearly that's better than buying a house.

You, me, and countless others (savetheclocktower as an example) are more than happy to wait a while for a cheap US one and take the (calculated) import risk, and do it up. BUT there are also plenty of other people who just want a trusted, UK, MOTd car - right now. And these people have a higher budget than a year or two ago.
