In 2000, the exchange rate was about 1.5, so that $26k purchase cost him about 17300 gbp.

that would be worth between 26-30k gbp in 2014
Whether that's a good investment depends on you own personal investment strategy. You may have gotten a better return on a Group B rally car imho.
Edit - I just re-read your post. The Original Owner possibly paid $26 for it, but the selling owner paid between $25-30k for it in 2000. So the selling owner did much better in 15 years than the original owner did in the first 18
