I would disagree with that, given that the seller has to pay commission + VAT on the sale, it is usually a better as a seller (if you are not in a rush to sell) to hold out for your asking price with a private sale.

In the case of this auction, with an entry price of £100 (assuming it was a standard entry and not premium), a commission of 12% + VAT and a hammer price of £29,120, after deductions, the seller walks away with £24,827.

To be fair, of all the classic car auctions I have been, either side, buyer and seller pay 5% each.
Which on a 30k sale means the seller still net's around 28k after deductions.
I guess, just like anything it all comes down to how quick you want to sell.

Typically - most of the auctions featuring DeLoreans on the last couple of years have been 12% (including VAT) each side. - with one exception - this one: viewtopic.php?f=56&t=4906 - where it was 5%. I suppose the argument is that the ones with the higher commissions tend to attract a better quality of buyer or something.

The one in this thread was 14.4% for the buyer and 6% for the seller (including VAT) - plus £100: http://www.classic-auctions.com/home/bu ... arges.aspx

So the figures were
Hammer: £29120
Buyer: £4193
Seller: £1847

i.e. £6040 to the auctioneer, £27273 to the seller.

There was another auction last year that didn't do too well really - £25k - plus I think there were a couple of others that didn't make their reserve? i.e. even at auction it isn't necessarily always a high price - but I agree it does tend to be.

Well it is the more desirable auto gearbox so that alone justifies the £40K price tag.
