The clock is completely repairable and shouldn't be thrown away. The only thing which prevents a repair is the vacuum display being damaged (unless you get a donor display from elsewhere)

Be very very careful with the vacuum display. Especially the little glass nipple where it's originally vacuumed and sealed from during manufacture. If the display get damaged, it's game over. It's the only part of the clock which is irreplaceable. I repaired mine and it's been perfect ever since.
