5th gear end cap wanted

Hi all,

I am on the search for a new Manual Transmission end cap. The one which covers the 5th gear assembly at the end of the gearbox. Part no. 103048.

I know this is a long shot.

Mine has suffered the 5th gear retaining nut damage some years ago, and was repaired before my ownership, but after having it off the car to do a lip seal replacement, upon proper inspection, it appears to be hairline fractured, and leaks oil quite badly, even with the fact it's been welded previously, and it's smothered in metal putty to try to hold it together.

The only solution from the vendors appears to be BUY A WHOLE NEW TRANSMISSION, which is a bit sledgehammer for my needs, so before I start saving my pennies, I thought i'd ask around.

I think the problem you will find is that it was never actually available as a separate part, so you need someone who has parted out a more complete transmission, and the reason it was parted out wasn't that :)
I have one for example, but it's attached to a complete working transmission, so I can't part it out.

Probably of no help, but the Renault part number for the DeLorean version of that part is 7701462033
I would have thought (but I'm really not sure at all) that the various versions for the UN1 would be interchangeable - worst case with a minor modification. This is only a hypothesis..! If so the 3 common part numbers for it in its various forms are:
7700721464
7700729006
7700731915
As used on all the obvious cars - Renault 21 being the most likely "cheapest" candidate.

If you've won the lottery, then Kevin and Lee at GTO would be the first people to ask as most likely to have a spare, at a price. But *if* my theory is correct, and *if* you can find a complete Renault 21 UN1 transmission (I have seen 3 on Ebay in the last year, one of which is in a DeLorean now), then that avenue would likely be cheaper, especially as you could sell what's left to a friendly UK-based parts vendor ;) - some of the internal parts are certainly interchangeable with the (DeLorean) 369 gearbox.

The (supposedly readily available and not too expensive) Lotus part number for the very last version of the UN1 is A082F6579S - but it's anyone's guess if that part actually fits the 369 box. GTO racing would probably know though if you asked them nicely :)

Lotus had 31 in stock in 2011.

A quick check reveals that Lotus do have them in stock - £283.62+VAT. But as above - this is only a theory that it would be compatible..... :)
Certainly some mods with a file would likely be required.... I'm guessing.

Arran,

Thanks for this. It's much appreciated. I am pleasantly surprised with your assistance.

I understand what you're saying about this being a part not available outside of a complete build, but given it has an individual part number of its own, and even DMC having a separate reference part number for it, suggests that at least at some point, it would have been available through either DMC or Renault themselves. Granted that was in days gone by, and i'm sure not easy to consider being the case these days.

I'll continue to see if i have any luck anywhere. It's sure not a cheap proposition to buy an entire assembly for just one part of it!

Thanks again for your valued input. I'll keep you posted with progress, if i make any. :)

Yeah, Renault (and Bosch) assigned a part number to literally everything, but that doesn't necessarily always mean that they actually supplied said part to the factory/dealers, there being a few obvious examples. My documentation indicates that zero were sold via the dealer network in the time leading up to the (unknown) date of my document, v.s. 1003 front brake discs, for example. Furthermore the "balance on hand" was zero at that point as well (vs. several hundred doors, for example).
The fact that DMCH don't even have a photo of one would strongly imply it was never actually supplied as a separate part.

The above Lotus idea might be worth a shot if that is within your budget (any lotus dealer would do it - DeRoure being the obvious choice). Distance selling regulations (Consumer Contracts Regulations) should protect you if it's obviously wrong and you don't actually fit it.

Okay thanks Arran.

I'll chase down some leads. :)

I know you’ve mentioned it’s been welded before but tbh that should not make any difference. A decent alloy welder would be able to sort it. From my experience with alloy welding leaking, it’s generally because who ever did in the first place was not very good at it.
I would just get it re-welded.

Or just stick this in whole: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/113841824813

Flip the diff over, whack it in, how hard could it be...?! (very, probably)
