I would check the figures add up. How much time and money will you need to spend to get it running vs putting that money on top of that to get a runner...….

Q. will you enjoy fixing it up for over a year without it touching the road ?

Not really worried about having it sit for a year or so, that was a given.

As for the figures, a runner now seem to be around $35k and up.... and they might go up more.

I’m “assuming” it would cost me less than that (plus the 12k) to get this to run if I do most of the work myself?

Also it would take me months (or years) to save another 20k. Isn’t it better to get this in now, and then slowly spend those 20k while fixing it up with time?

You can get a runner for under 30k, but its logical about saving up. That was my logic too.... I couldn't afford to spend 35 k on a finished car so accepted I would need to get one to work on.

Its satisfying and lets face it if you build it up to running, you run and enjoy it. If you spent 35k on one you will be cursing and learning from scratch when things inevitably fail.

However take heed from my starting issues which were dumb but after many hours I came in one night and said to my wife.... "there is only one thing worse than not owning a Delorean is owning one which doesn't work :)"

haha that's GREAT! Thanks for the advice, I'm hesitant... as mentioned I've seen the car live and it seemed less scary than what you see online.

Also as mentioned, don't you agree with me that if I see things are really that bad I could easily sell it back?

Ah, I wasn't sure whether there was another engine floating about on eBay hence the mention of Martin - didn't realise this was his car.

At least with this sale the lack of functionality is visible  :)

Personally, i say keep saving and wait for another.

It took me 6months to get my car running and on the road and i worked on mine every weekend and most weekdays after work. This looks like 2 hellish years at least. Can you put up with not being able to drive the car for that long? I know i couldnt. It annoyed me when the car was off the road for 2 weeks when i had to sort out the clutch slave.

From the pics you sent me, the LCA areas look like they need to be refurbed at the very least if not replaced entirely as do the brakes/calipers/discs. Serious money needs to be thrown at that car.

Personally this isnt a car where heart rules the mind. Whilst yes you could just sell it on if its too much for you, you may be sat with it a while.

However, saying all that, if youre determined enough, anything is possible. If you do end up with this one, then good luck and hope it goes well for you.

I dont think its that bad, if mines anything to go buy you could do a complete rebuild in a year, mine took 9 months although i think i nearly got divorced cause of it lol

+1. However much work you think this car needs, multiply that by 3. I would wait and keep saving.

i think id buy it, but then i do quite enjoy working on em and i bet the frame isnt as bad as mine was so you could probably do a body off even quicker than 9 months

Alan, welcome.

Why don't you go and have a look at some other Deloreans first to see quality of car vs price and do some research before you jump in to buy.

A running car but needing some finishing mods (such as interior overhaul or minor bodywork finishing for example) might be a good compromise.

Where are you located, as there are owners that could show you around one.
