chassis number plate wated

Postby hana 5284 » Fri Mar 12, 2021 7:04 am

Hi guys and girls and Gender Neutral Dan, just wondering if anyone on here has an old frame number off an old frame they have scrapped they don't want and want to give it away or sell it. Not for me its for a mate that needs an original frame number to put on a new chassis to make it look old.

let me know if you have one kicking about or if anyone knows anyone that could make an original looking one with the stamped numbers.

Thanks again.

My Frame number is simply numbers "written" in weld by some skilled welder. Not a stamped plate or anything fancy. Although I know later cars had more professional looking number plates done. But the point is, early cars weren't anything fancy. Maybe you could ask a nice welder to simply write four numbers on to a plate, and then weld that plate on to the back leg of the chassis where it would have belonged?

Thanks Rissy i did talk to Chris Nicholson and he suggested that, the only thing is the vin is in the 3000's and i think welded chassis plates were only on the very early cars. however i wouldn't think the Australian motor reg company would know that so could be an option.

thanks again

I have a welded Chassis plate and I am 7161. Depending on which version of the truth you look at :)

According to the history books, the numbers written on the back of the chassis in marker pen were nothing to do with the chassis number. Just like the vin, engine and chassis numbers were never meant to align either.

oh i thought the pen numbers were infact the chassis numbers, go figure! i think he is going to have to get welded numbers on a plate then just tack it on. to memory i think the last 4 numbers on my vin are about 500 out on my chassis. was there ever matching vin to chassis numbers or are they all out?
thanks again

There is a vin list by one of the US clubs which quite often list chassis numbers next to the other vehicle details. Maybe you could find your vin on there. Failing that, you could always send James Espy (of DMC and runner of the Delorean Museum) a message to ask if he has the chassis number for your vin. Then you'll know what number belongs on there. Even failing that, with the research, you might at least identify a number not already known to another car, and choose that for your car and minimise the risk of duplicating someone elses chassis number there.

I'm sure there may have been the original plan to have some sort of alignment (why wouldn't you?), but in 1981 with a bunch of people who aren't used to having a job, never mind working to processess and building cars.....it could be that "best laid plans....". So to my knowledge, i've never heard of a single car having aligned numbers. Not even the first ones off the production line!

The numbers written in pen on the rear crossmember was the car original destined vin.

As often the cars were pulled off the line for tech work by the time it was reinserted the vin plate had been fitted to a different car

Several times I have seen the pen number match the vin plate including my current car and the one before

But it is common for them to be out

...but never a vin number, and chassis number matching. Even finding a vin to match the written number (not to say the chassis number itself) must be quite a rarity. My vin and the written number on the chassis are many thousands out from one another from memory, and they're both different again from the actualy chassis number welded on there. Interesting stuff though.

Agreed

Vin plate and chassis plate no match

But the pen and vin are often very close, and occasionally matching as things moved around during assembly.
