Martin was on about the thermostat in the water pump Rob

Seems like a good possible cause to me too

I've been searching on the net for a proper description of the cooling system as the workshop manual is very short about it. I can't comprehend what wrong and the dmctalk sections scare the hell out of me about blow head gaskets. And a temp sensor either works or it doesn't they tell me.

Replacing that sounds supereasy, but it probably won't.

So the thermostat is responsible for switching from inner coolant loop to long loop right?
If that was failing the coolant hoses on the outside of the engine would never become hot. Well they do, but only warm to the touch. It was only 15C last sunday.

On an entirely different subject: Welmoed pointed me to the fact I do not have a frequency valve... That combined with the open loop and strange WUR (with only one vacuum connection so no delay valve) makes me wonder more and more what the PO did to my engine setup..

Remove thermostat and test by boiling in a pan etc.

Have you got a 'self bleed' kit fitted?
Originally you bleed the system by unscrewing the bolt out of the water pump and bleed out (sometimes replaced with a spark plug!)

WRT the CPR and lack of frequency valve, a PO might have put some other 'Volvo' type parts on.....

As cineman said, see if you can get the bosch codes from the various parts etc........

I'd like to get back on the thermostat topic. As you can see, the bleed nipple is seriously wrecked and stuck. I wanted to remove that so I can see if it needs bleeding.

Can anybody point me how to diagnose to indicate a bad thermostat?

Fit a bleed kit first, Ed or Martin should be able to get you one....

Remove thermostat, put it in a pan of boiling water, make sure it opens and note the temp when it does........use an old saucepan though..

Yes you need to get that bleed nipple out otherwise you may have air trapped above the pump thermostat.

Looking at it you have enough of this nipple left to get the rest of it out, plus that bleed nipple is made of a soft 'brassy' material. Worse comes to worse it should be easy to drill out with the pump 'top housing' off the car.

Self bleed kit is a must.

Thermostat should open at 87 degrees C
