Indeed it does live! We were about 5 seconds away from blowing the engine up (my fault, loose cam sprockets) but with them tightened up and all reassembled the engine was running great (considering it's not set up properly yet). Tomorrow we adjust the mixture and the timing, sort out the dodgy wiring (including the broken starter solenoid), put the fascia back on and hey presto! Perhaps... :D

Pics to follow when I get back in the office on Monday to take them off the camera...

Massive thanks to Dan, Suz, Mike, TT and Al for coming down today, it wouldn't have been possible without you!

Saturday

Saturday finally saw the engine running although not all that happily. We figured the iffy engine note was the cams and the mixture. Mec hung in there till late, and Dan and Suz even later - finally getting away at about 11pm. I decided to sack off my Sunday plans and try to get the car going on Sunday on the grounds I wouldn't get another chance to work on it before *a hotel* and if I didn't get the car up there it would likely be buggered for months.

So in principle it was only the rear end of the car to put back together, solenoid to fix, wiring to sort and engine to set up for Sunday.

Sunday

Sunday morning I went down to Halfrauds to pick up the wiring bits (big spades to mash the previously mangled brown wires onto the starter solenoid), came back and rebuilt the starter solenoid out of the new one and the old one and got the fascia on. Dan and Mec came over but we couldn't get the car running. Mec disappeared with the engine crane and finally we got the car started when we realised it was a dodgy connection on the Bosch jobby on the back of the bulkhead. Put the tail-lights and number plate on and went out for a test drive - it's misfiring all over the shop. Messed around with the mixture - no difference. Tested the injectors - all good. Time to change the spark plugs, but they feel like they're going to strip the heads. So I'm faced with a choice: Take the spark plugs out now, or trailer the car to *a hotel* and take them out there. I figure might as well get the car stranded in a barn where it's been living anyway...

So the spark plugs come out (unhappily) but the new ones go in fine. Phew! Seems like the old ones are the wrong size or something... Try the engine again - still a misfire. Hmmm.

Next thing to check - ignition wiring. Hey presto, some of the HT leads are plugged into the wrong ports on the dizzy. The culprit will remain nameless :D We sort those out - engine fires up much better. Misfire removed. Dan gets busy tweaking the mixture and idle speed as well as he can with no measuring devices (or indeed time for repeated test drives) and it's time to replace the louvre and engine cover, and tidy up the barn. Dan is released from his BEST WEEKEND EVER at 9pm :D

Car is in one piece and barn is tidy at 11pm. Time to hit the road. I go easy in her, but quite quickly it's obvious the engine is much happier above 2500rpm, below that it's a bit all over the shop. Also the brakes have a peculiar habit of losing servo power (going stiff under your foot) - a rev of the engine and they seem to work again. Bit concerning, but the car gets me home safely at 12.30am.

Monday
This morning I figure the engine is running rich so I attempt to do some gentle mixture adjustments myself. After 2 hours I've
achieved no improvement whatsoever (and some fairly alarming temporary dis-improvements) so remember there's a garage round the corner and take it there. Persuade the main guy to get up from behind the desk and take a look at it with the CO machine. Turns out the CO is at 10%

He fiddles away with it, moans that the air screw (left of the idle speed screw) doesn't do anything and it should, finally gets the CO down to 2%, but the HC are up at 2200 and they should be 300. He says this could be caused by all sorts of things. I tell him I'll book the car in and disappear off with it. He's left the idle up at 1700rpm, so when I get home I adjust this down to 1000rpm and it seems happy there (not so happy beneath it). Car runs well though, like a normal car from low revs upwards (didnt get a chance to go above 4500rpm). Fit for the journey to Caley to have a proper look at it anyhow. Also the braking issue seems to have gone away - strange.

Get the car home, park it up. 5 minutes later realise I've blocked someone in. It won't start. No ignition at all on the starter motor. Grrrr!!!! Am hoping it's just the old fuel accumulator issue - but that only used to stitch me up after 30 mins plus after last running. So will try the car tonight when I get home and see if it starts. If not....

Any wise ideas on the hydrocarbons issue?

And thanks again to everyone who gave their time this weekend - it really was hugely appreciated and beers will be coming your way in a couple of weeks!

By jove what a load of work. You all make me proud.

Don't worry too much about the HC. At my last MOT my CO% was 1.1 (!) but the HC was over 2000, at 800RPM idle.

It won't start. No ignition at all on the starter motor. Grrrr!!!! Am hoping it's just the old fuel accumulator issue

If the engine doesn't catch when cranking, it might be fuel related. Does your starter soleniod engange? If your starter motor does not run at all, this seems to be an electrical issue. It has nothing to do with a bad accumulator, pump or anything else.

Thanks for the reassurance on the HC... Chris S is going to come over tonight to have a look at it. As for the starting, the starter motor is turning but there's no ignition on the engine. Hopefully with Chris over tonight if this is still being troublesome we can diagnose this too...

It's probably those wires on the resistors on the bulkhead playing up again.

How many turns did it take the guy in the garage to get it 2.0% ?

You missed out setting the timing in your list of Sunday work Gez ;)
