Just to be clear Rob .. you have confirmed it is your head gaskets that are at fault ?

I seriously doubt it to be anything else. Only a sniff test could determine that. But the pressure buildup in the coolant is definitely a sign as the can be no other way to explain the pressure buildup after engine shutdown.

i think its head gaskets or gasket, i only say this cos im usually right but on a serious note, there is only one reason for that much pressure build up and its usually the same ole thing, the heads lift in the middle or lack of corrosion protection rots the head gasket

if you get it to caley il do them no probs as long as we can get them skimmed

Also ther arn't many engine which could last as long without new head gaskets and a skim after 30 years

First, I can't quite follow you there on the head, but I know I can skim a beer, european style (with some foam on it).

But seriously: i've been reading about 300 google pages on the subject this evening and 95% of the similar overflow stories relate to bad radiator caps. Problem with them forums is that the posters rarely give feedback on what finally fixed their problems. Therefore I would really need to be able to verify that the gaskets are the problem (as mike said)..

I just came back in from a marvellous 250mls trip through the Dutch countryside. Quite unexplainable I did not loose a single drop of coolant.. But I am sure when I get back in the garage tomorrow there will be a small puddle.

I did the much needed oil change today, out came a lot of black oozing oil, but no traces of coolant whatsoever.

TT: The gasket change might be unnecessary so you can relax a bit. We'll see when i arrive in Hunstanton!

Yes, If not dropping coolant. Now for the big stupid question: what if i've been overfilling the coolant all this time?

If you overfill it Rob, in theory, it should just 'spit' it out of the overflow on the header tank.
