Exactly Mike,
Once you attach the word "Ferrari" to the part it quadruples in price, then add the word "classic" and it's times by 10
This makes me very mad as the engineering is very crude, yet the mystique makes the price ridiculous.
But like most classic cars you can cross reference stuff, which although is a long frustrating way of buying parts for your car it does save money. Last week I saw a rusty long past it rear brake caliper on US ebay for £1399.00 it looked so bad I doubt it could be refurbished. However it did show the Dunlop-Girling code. This cross referenced to a Jaguar MkII 420 1963 with larger piston. You can buy them brand new from a Jag specialist for £300.

That's £1000 less than a rusty good for nothing piece of junk on ebay.
But unfortunately it's not that easy to trace everything and the stuff that's just specific to the Ferrari (body & trim items) are the most costly. To the point where it's cheaper to manufacture them yourself than buy an original. eg the secondhand front grill for £12,000. I reckon you could make a good new one for less than £1000.
