Wanna See Me Chopper

Postby bandit » Sun Mar 24, 2013 7:02 pm

Bought this baby last week. Huge, huge thanks to Tyson for picking it up for me ( & stumping up the cash, for that matter) it was near Peterborough.
It's a proper job, mk1 August 1970, unrestored & complete ( except for correct gear knob) which I've just bought.
It's staying that way as well & then going on the wall of my 70's room :D

It's amazing how everybody from our era found white dog shit so fascinating. Although, sticking lolly sticks in it Al was not a game we played that involved it, we just flicked it at the ginger kid!!!

That brings back the memories (Chopper, not white dog turds)! Those seat springs, the three speed gears, just like a car. My mate up the street had a red one just like that. All the "big boys" had them. Apparently I was "too young" to handle a chopper (oh-err) so my parents would only get me a Tomahawk, the Choppers baby brother

Later on, some bastard nicked it, so I leap-frogged my mate and got a Grifter next.

Yours looks to be in great condition.

Got me curious as to how much one would cost - suprised as to the amount of parts available on ebay. And then, this caught my eye:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/RALEIGH-CHOPP ... 35c581330e

800 quid!!!! That seems like a lot.

If you think £800 is a lot, try this

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VERY-RARE-RAL ... 19da4b53b8

I paid £460 for mine, but as with lots of stuff they vary a lot. Mk1's are worth more & are generally more sought after than Mk2's. I had an orange Mk1 just like this, xmas day 73 (Slade were No1 with Merry Xmas Everybody) so I have particularly looked for exactly this one. They also get 'over restored' in my opinion, I liked the 'patina' on this one, just as some kid left it probably more than 30 yrs ago. It's nearly 43 yrs old, scary.
