DAY SIX

Postby ALEXAKOS » Sat Aug 10, 2013 11:03 am

Okay!
Engine is out and "rolling"
Image
Damn those old tires in the garage came in handy :)

Image

Next was the down fall of the frame! Eight screws gold the frame to the body. a few hoses and wires... and off it comes.
Honestly.... After separating those two after 30 years, I feel bad that the D is mostly raised by the body. The frame having all that weight on it burdens the two screws that are under the center console.

Also managed to strip the interior.

Easy peazy!

As you may imagine the interior was just a layer of tar and rust pieces from the components.
After a VERY hot shower spray in my home tub and several latex gloves... I got a pretty good result for starters.

Images from the interior:
Right side is botom

Now bottom is... bottom

Part of the scraped tar goo

Ah yes... used a lot of paper too...

And tonight I left it with a gallon of Unleaded to soften the rest of the tar from the walls so I can get the final cleaning.

U asked for it mate! ;)

]I have placed the frame on two carts so I can swing it round while working on it.
Image

There I started to work on the rust... and noted the frame's weak spots. There are 6 hollow points that have holes on the top and NONE on the bottom for water draining. So after a rainy drive or powerfull wash, water gets in there and has NO EXIT. So it basically sits in there until it evaporates. That could take quite some time during the winter....

Here they are:

REAR FRAME.
Engine mount column.
(you'll see what I discovered cutting open the exterior cover)
Image
Four entry points with No.1 Being wide open! The other three are tapped but may give water some minimal access over time

Right next to that, close to where the transition is mounted and behind the lower arm is mounted:
Image
Two entry points, again no escape hole underneath. The larger one may assist the escape of vapors.

Finally, FRONT FRAME
Where the fuel tank is mounted and the metal line clips are in.

Image
Image
Five entry points. Again NO EXIT!!!
This is corrosion's Paradise!

So I started cutting out a section of the rear frame's cover.
This is what I saw:

Image
I removed the epoxy that was no longer a part of the metal.
Image

What happened here is, water created its own siphon. Started eating away the components to get out.

Wonder what your frame looks like from the inside?

Image

So I am hard at Rust removing work that will be patched with clean sheets of metal welded with tic weld.

Also cleared the frame of other parts.

As soon as I am done clearing the heavy rust sections it will be sand blasted.
