Epic thread! I take it you've had experience of this kind of restoration before?

Interested in your mods - why do you want to carb as opposed to K-jet? And surely the 997 turbo exhaust is an expensive piece of kit? Cheaper to source one of the various stainless units?

Thanx for the appreciation !
Actually no! This is my first in depth restoration. Until now I had restored or pimped a 1971 corvette, a 1988 Porsche 928s and a 1992 Pontiac firebird. Most of which was merely cosmetic improvements.
This is also the first home I live in that has a garage. ;)

My mods:
The Porsche exhaust is a part mostly sold at 800 to 1500€ at a very good condition. I was going just for the tips actually cause I like their looks on a D.
Image
Yet i am also very disappointed with the D sound. So I snatched those complete exhaust era for under 500€ on ze German eBay. Sure you can find other solutions. I just landed on this one.

Why carbs? The k jet us a very poor in power system. I had an experience of a 70's 911with k jet. After that Porsche switched to webers that made I a completely different car!!!! Full of energy and enthusiasm!!

Hey Alex, good to see you here. I love this.

 Bare metal!!

Having been over, under and thru my car, without major disassembly, I am really enjoying this.

ALEXAKOS wrote:So you guys are up to DATE ;)

What doi you think about it?
The condition
the engine
the exhaust etc..

Fucked, Fucked, and no real opinion on the exhaust, bar "to each their own". For an exhaust I'd probably go with one of the UK systems, but whilst my original system carries gas inefficiently on a convoluted route from combustion chamber to atmosphere just below the rear bumper, I'll keep it.

I do want to change it, but my need is not yet a thousand pounds. When it leaks, it goes.

However, it must be said that my car has done about 90,000 miles, is 30 + years old, and still has its original system. OK, its not the best system for gas-flow, but it still works, isn't holed and passes MOT's. Says something for it...

Anyone know who made it originally?? (cos it surely wasn't DMC!! See my last sentence  )

Keep up the good work Alex, and keep the thread going. Top stuff. Cheers,

a

Fucked, Fucked,

What? really?
Fucked as in "no change in getting it back to life".
fucked as in "what you have done fucked it",
or fucked as in "I wouldn't bother to take a D in that condition"

Thank you on our insights.

I really appreciate your feedback guys. This is the first Delorean, not just that I own, but I had ever seen in my life. So Mechanically I may know a thing or two. Your expertise is very significant to me.
Thank you in advance!!

Hey Alex,

I am no expert, just an enthusiastic amateur!

Fucked as in "current condition unserviceable, requires much input in both effort and cash to make good" (but every chance in bringing it back to life!)

Fucked as in "What you have done won't make it any worse" (anyway, you haven't done anything bad, just stripped it as far as I can see. Just doing what is needed. Don't worry, keep going.

Yes tho, fucked as in "I wouldn't bother to take a D in that condition". But that shouldn't mean that YOU shouldn't!! I think much worse has been brought back from the dead. I think that that is rather the good thing about D's. They can be pretty neglected, and still salvageable. I think what you are doing is great, tho it is a big job. And probably quite expensive and time consuming. However, a great project, good fun, something to do with spare time and money :P Enjoy!!

No offence intended!!

Great thread again, Alex.

As Kipling wrote: "You're a better man than I am, Gunga Din!" and I am sure he was talking about such a formidable restoration.

From talking to Alex on the other forum, I think he has been quite surprised by the actual state of the car. One of the risks of buying un-seen, even from a DMC dealer.

But he has certainly stepped up to the challenge and is going about it the right way. It makes my eye-browed fascia seem insignificant

@andyd
Offended? Ha! A rookie can't be offended. ;) Don't worry, none taken. Thanx on the opinion.

@mouse
Pssst!! :shhh: This is the copy of the other thread

Well yes! Mouse has done it again! He has painted the picture as it is.
I bought the DMC from a dealer in Florida. The price was petty cash actually for a D in the US. Not to mention for European values. I received a good set of photos but what disappointed me on the dealers description, was that he did not mention they had it for parts pulling. So a good dozen parts were missing (again a value of max 300USD). So I though, buying a car of the total cost of its body panels, with 17K original miles and an overall good aesthetic condition, would not be that much of a risk. The only damage was in the shipping and customs amounts paid.

So far my estimate is that I will be having a very interesting Delorean at the total price of 20.000 euros. But, with a lot of personal time invested which I enjoy doing. I always purchased cars with faults. I just love the screwing part... If you know what I mean!
