Doesn't the headlights, dipped and main beam run through relays already?
I thought the current that runs through the switch itself is for the front and side marker lights, and rear tail lights. It's normally the bulb holders in these locations that have corroded, which causes resistance, which leads to heat and eventually causes the internals of the switch to melt.
