Irritating squeaky rear suspension improved with silicone spray. Simple thing but makes it seem a much more refined car. Win! :jzd:

Also a bit on the doors and seals improves opening and closing. :jzd: :jzd:

Double bonus.

Also did a pre test for the mot to check emissions hand brake and headlights. All good! Or at least acceptable if he looks the other way... Remarkable!

So I dragged the car out of slumber, to start MOT prep, and general fettle to make good for going to the Netherlands.

I haven't touched it since June, after Belfast. I lost the outer LH headlight on position 1 on the up to Liverpool, then the high beams on the way back. :?

The MOT expired a week or so after I got back, and I had to get bikes recommissioned for going to the Isle of Man.

I connected the battery and she "fired right up" as the Yanks are very fond of saying.

I checked the earths, but they were good, and the plug at the back of the switch. Fine. Relays were clicking, but no more than a single RH lamp would work. Fuses good too...

Headlamps out then...

First off, I didn't like this

Then I removed the sealed beam units. This was pretty hard on the fascia, but it could do with repair and repaint anyway. Next year!

I couldn't work out why the lamps were so tight to the fascia. But it looks like the panel to which the bucket brackets mount is not oem. Mike Ward, I know this is  for you, but its not really seen

And as I am very fond of telling you, it IS an early car, so questionable fit generally. .. :shhh:

Here's the ? Replacement panel I mean. Looks stainless, is this normally mild steel??

So this may well need fettling when the buckets go back in after a lick of POR15.

As they came out, the adjustment screws are tucked really far in...

Adjusting these will further wreck the fascia. Undesirable for now, but unacceptable for the future once it's repaired and painted! So this will require a creative solution!

So back to the lights. The RH sealed beam filament had failed (switch in position 1, effectively sidelights). Wiring seemed ok-ish, only minor evidence of the "hand of bodge". And no scotch locks etc.

The sealed beam inners were both serviceable, eo will be reused.

The lack of high beam turned out to be this

I bought a new fuse box a couple of years ago. Now seems like a good time to bite the bullet. ..

I will also fit the club-supplied relay kit, and of course the 2 club supplied H4 outers. Which will also give me a proper side light. Time to do some reading on wiring etc and the side light options.

Cheers all. It's nice to get back into it after a bit of a lay off. It definitely means you hate the fucker a bit less!!

However, I think it was just to do with temperature, moisture and dust from storage??

Thankfully it disappeared once, I guess, the temperatures all equilibrated?

Anyway, I was relieved that it didn't stay like that!

Those headlight holders in the fascia rust like a bastard on all of them. Hope you can get it all sorted Andy!

Mild steel for sure.
They are a bastard in my opinion , we have the screws and plastic inserts to make an awkward job easier

Hi guys

Thanks for input. At the risk of appearing *really* stupid, I was referring (mild vs stainless) to the large car-width bracket to which the "bucket holders" attach.

ie.

Lamp > bucket > "bucket holder" > panel in question.

You can see it in stainless behind my rusty bucket holders in the pic above. I am presuming this is not stainless from Dunmurry. (Tho not imortant really, other than the accuracy of where the mounting holes are drilled)

I would like to see if there is any wiggle-room in where I mount the bucket holders to give a bit more access to the adjustment and mounting screws.

I dont want to remove the fascia (and the bonnet, by necessity) to adjust the beam. So I may play a hairdryer over the very edges to soften them to get screwdriver access.

Check here -->

https://www.flickr.com/photos/researchp ... 362615561/

It is super tight for access ie. None! (And rusty buckets be GONE!!)

I am in the process of mutilating the buckets to get the Hella H4s to fit, with the rubber boot over the back to keep the water out...

Cheers

The hella h4 lights dont sit far enough into the buckets.

This is the sealed beam unit

So in order to fit them, with the front of the lens in the original position, I needed to cut a hole in the back to allow the rubber boot covered aperture to poke out the back.

After a futile attempt at filing, I then decided to drill about 50 2mm holes, snd join them up with a hacksaw, then dress it down with the file.

Not quite right, but close:

After saying "fuck this for a game of soldiers", I ejected some moths from my wallet and bought a Dremel. Better:

The unit now fits the bucket properly. No modification of the tabs on the unit necessary- with the back cut out, the tabes engage nicely with the recesses in the buckets. A lick of paint and they are looking pretty smart, even though they are barely seen.

The fight goes on...

I thought I'd fit my nice hacked up and painted buckets today. Just a little bit of wiring to chase up first.

It was easy to see PO mods, as they were all blue wire....! yes, well done!

Position 1 on my light switch always switched on my dipped beam. Pos 2 made no difference, just a little brighter, and brought the stalk switch into the circuit to switch on hi beam.

So something was clearly not right.

Turns out the running lights had tapped into the dipped circuit, and was back feeding it?!

The side markers were tapped into the green wire to the front running lights. Its not apparent on my car where the oem feed (and earth) for the side markers should connect to the main harness. Any pointers??

I would like to revert to standard if possible. And definitely remove to feed to the main beams from the side markers?!

However, I will probably use the blue feeds teed off each of the running lights to feed the new sidelights as there is no provision for this on the standard loom. At least there are no scotch locks!...

While I'm at it, and prior to the fuse box replacement I will add the headlight switch saver and clesn and check the main light switch.
