Another couple of hours doing some odds and sods on the D this afternoon along with Stuart Rees - engine running a bit lumpy and running rich so thought we would stick the new air filter in for starters - when we took it out Stuart seemed to think that the green body of the filter looked like an original - after stu left I had a closer look and seen a number on the side - 09 81 - which would match up with my car Oct 81 !!! Surely with 40k on the clock and nearly 40 yrs old this is the only air filter it’s ever had ????

Yep that's definitely an original air filter. But it's theoretically possible it's a replacement NOS one I suppose. I still have a few original "new" ones like that, people do buy and fit them still. Probably unlikely though, your theory is probably correct.

With some of my earlier cars - a service meant a quick tap of the filter - get the dust out and just put it back - not much dust was ever in there to be honest.
