Retrosound Santa Barbara Install

Postby Miles » Wed Mar 13, 2019 1:45 pm

Sorry for the sideway's photos in advance! My phone is a little broken *cough* Luke Palmer
Like many DeLorean owners, the original Craig radio wasn't really sufficient, yes the radio worked but the tape deck didn't and the audio quality wasn't great. So after looking around for radios I had basically three choices; cut the centre console plate to DIN size(or buy a pre-cut one) and install a modern radio, Buy a different old radio that will fit right in or buy a Retrosound stereo. I went for the Retrosound as it will look like a classic stereo but should actually work!
I saw Tristan's post on the forum and I noticed he had modified his Craig faceplate, I didn't realise that this was because the faceplate supplied with the Retrosound stereo is not wide enough. Anyway I decided that I'd modify the original faceplate to accommodate the smaller display on the Retrosound.

I super-glued a couple of sheets of Styrene together, cut them to size and glued it to the Craig faceplate.
After a little filing it was ready for paint!

This is the supplied faceplate, it looks nice but the spindle holes are too close together and it's a little plain:

After some fiddling (I had to bend the Infinimount brackets so it would fit) I had this:

I'm quite pleased with my faceplate modification, from this angle it's difficult to tell which part was added:

So then I moved on to the soldering:

A quick test:

After I tested it, I just had to put everything back together:

£289.99 is a lot for a stereo as you can get stereo that have the same functions for about £100 less. But the sound quality is excellent with my Alpine speakers and I think Retrosound nailed it with the retro look! It has two aux inputs, a USB input, Mic input(mic included), Bluetooth connectivity, AM/FM, DAB/DAB+ and 32000 different colour combinations for the display.

Very nice. I’m considering buying one for my car. I prefer to keep my car as stock as possible with regards to how it looks but the stock radio just doesn’t cut it.

Have you considered getting it modded with bluetooth? https://www.facebook.com/DeloreanW460BluetoothModule/

Yes I’ve been considering that as well. I suppose that is the best route as far as originality goes.
