Next sorting the rear fascia.

I want a robust method of positive engagement for the fasteners for the rear lights and number plate bezel. I think captive nuts in ally bar maybe bonded into the back of the painted fascia.

Currently, my steel bolts engage haphazardly with fucked captive-ish plastic nuts.

So this probably won't be cleaned, but I might paint the impact absorber? What to use?

The L-brackets are somewhat ill fitting, so I will try to get these better, or remake them.

Also fit the D-Reverse. And do the fog light mod, while also placating Mike Ward and make my tail lights light up oem style.

Once this is all good, I'll get it painted. Later.

Cheers, andy

250 very comfortable miles this weekend.

Oil leaks currently sorted. No coolant leaks. New mirrors rock (as much as mirrors can).

Engine feels spot on, and returned a calculated 32mpg on the motorway. Result.

In order to sort the wiggly fascia I used a heat gun and G clamps to get it reasonably into shape:

(Not too bad from the outside eith the lights fitted admittedly)

During, after the first ten quid heat gun literally went on fire on first use and started spewing flames!!  that was a surprise anyway! New one's on the floor.

Drilling square holes for the captive nuts...

To make 4 of these

I also repaired the split inner fascia with a length of angle ally with more captive nuts. Thank God for the square drill- filing all those squares would have been a right pain in the arse... :|

Then black bond n seal adhesive, and nipped the nuts down till it was cured. Bingo (maybe)

Mating the inner and outer, it looks now like the outer PU fascia has shrunk over time, and maybe this has helped bow and split the inner. Either way, the centre 3 bolts line up, but they get progressively off centre as you go out, meaning heat gun, clamps and probably Dremel. I may fit an ally strip over the painter fascia, to sandwich it. So, (Inside angle ally)-(inner fascia)-(outer fascia)-(ally strip).

Anyway I sandwiched the rear lights plates with lots of bond n seal, and let it cure. In the morning, bolts csme out, lights out, bars stayed in place. Like all things on a D, it kind of "fits where it hits", but 10 of the 12 bolts go in easy, and the other 2 will get a fettle. Result.

Also made plates for the rear bezel and splodged them in.

(So, guess which side I did first...? Lots of swearing, on the first time...)

So that seems ok. I'm getting competent at getting the fascia on and off, and its nice not to give too much of a fuck about it as I'm doing all this to get it painted. It even lines up ok I think?

Rear lights, markers, D-reverse kit to fit, and the rear is about done. Then onto the same sort of thing at the front.

Its weird, -I do LOADS to this car, but bar the ride height, it is almost cosmetically the same as when I got it. It looks no different, a bit shinier, and cracks in the paint, same wank interior. Drives better, mind.

Sorted insurance today as well. Good- hopefully more miles this year.
