New guy....some questions

Postby jimxms » Mon Jun 10, 2019 11:46 am

Hi All,

Firstly well done on having a forum that actually allows new members to post threads and view attachments (none of the other Delorean forums I joined allowed this!).

I've just purchased my first Delorean and it needs a little restoration. My first big task is sorting out the birds nest of dangerous wiring that the previous owner added. What I really need to know is where the main grounding locations are. Does anyone have any pictures?

Also I was quite surprised when I went to tax my Delorean the other day: £250 a year - seems a bit steep for a 2.8L car from 1981!! My imported 6.2L Corvette costs the same! Is that the same for all of you? The reason I ask is when I search the MOT database it says my Delorean was first registered in 2005!

Yes the tax rate is correct, mine was 278 this year, dont worry though, come 2021 it will become tax exempt (free),

as for ground wires they are all over the car, there is a large one in the engine bay on the right under the coolant bottle, another large one on the engine mount to engine, on the front of the car there is a collection of ground wires on one ring terminal, this bolts to the rad support bracket, there is also a large ground wire for the battery earth which bolts to the trailing arm bracket under the o/s (passenger side) wheel arch, not sure on any others around the fuse panel area as i haven't delved into that area on mine (yet), others on the forum will no doubt be able to help on that.

Congrats on the purchase, whats your vin and where are you located ?

Thanks for the reply mike. Mine is VIN 1452 and I'm in Essex.

Do you happen to know where the nearest ground is that is accessible from the frunk (do delorean guys call it that?). Would this be the rad support bracket you mentioned?

I'm installing a 2nd battery in there, and am putting together a shopping list of how much 4AWG wire I need.

I would guess the nearest ground is front of the chassis next to the horn mount & rad bracket. No, no one calls it a frunk & you don’t ‘install’ anything around here, you fit it ;)

Thanks bandit I'll have go and check that out when it stops raining.

No installing things? Thats gonna take some getting used to! I tend to only use 'fit' when putting something on the car that was already there previously: "Fit a new tyre, fit a new headlight bulb, take the car to quikfit so they put on new parts that don't need replacing" :p
