The VOD

Postby DMC1983 » Sun Mar 29, 2020 11:50 pm

A little update...

The valley is cleaning up nicely. Needs a little hoover but so far, so good. Still some crap to be cleaned. Its damn annoying to get into those cavities...

I decided the water pump will be addressed while im in here. Amazing how a tiny thing (was just gonna change the cap and rotar arm) turns into a big thing like an engine bay overhaul
It was all gonna need doing sooner or later anyway. It didnt look too bad but its one of those matters of when. I think ill buy a new pump and send this off to dave howarth to overhaul and keep as a spare. And again, no snapped bolts. I really should get a lottery ticket...

I had a look at the state of the spark plugs in their holes today (not removed them yet) and whilst 4 looked fine, 1 had white fuzz on it but the worst one was this. Part of the HT lead stayed put.

All those little bags your parts come in from Arran have come in handy. Ive used them to keep lines and the such sealed and free from debris

Water pump cleanup

And so today saw my struggle with the pump back. And here is where I suffered one snapped bolt which considering the state of them, its hardly surprising but 1 out of 5 is pretty good going (i guess i was due a snap). I actually dont know if its worth refurbing the main pump body as I need to get the pulley off first, but i guess its still possible. Anyway, that can wait as i wanted the thermostat housing, pump back, the thermotime switch and its screw adapter off to go onto the new pump I will be buying soon.

The backing plate screws. Rusted to hell

Thermotime switch and adapter cleaned ready for the new pump. Needs new washers though.

I also took a look at one of the AC pulleys and I can see why it seized now but since i dont even have a condenser, this can wait.

Im now inclined to believe the PO has gone into the valley at some point up to the removal of the air intake (may also explain why none of my bolts snapped). My first clue was they had used some sort of sealant on the hoses that connect to the pump as can be seen here...

That sealant gunk was on every hose that connects to the pump. Clearly they were concerned enough about the VOD to do this. It still appears that a leak had started from one of these hoses. No idea which one and its all getting swapped for silicone ones.

My next clue was when I pulled the spark plugs. They werent bosch but NGKs...

So all the plugs have now been loosened ready for the new ones. Im going with Mike W's advice and using a slightly different model of NGKs.

So im getting there and taking my time in doing so. The slowly slowly approach seems to be working out very well and I still amaze myself with what Ive done and am doing to this car. The trip into the VOD is something I thought I would get someone else to do but its rather rewarding doing these things myself. Plus it saves me some cash.

Top work there

I don't think much can be done with the old water pumps. Mine didn't leak but changed it anyway as knew it would probably start leaking at some point. I gave my old one to Arran rather than bin it, but at the time I don't think even Arran did anything with it.

Thanks guys.

What makes it leak is surely just seals or bearings on the pulley shaft. Im actually thinking about pulling it apart and going to SKF to get new seals and bearings as the only kits i can find online are for volvo specific water pumps or kits like in the club shop. I actually want to try and keep the original pump and since ive gone this far, im thinking i could probably do the seals/bearings myself too.

Failing that, ill speak to dave h
