So just got the email that my car is unloaded and ready for collection, oh just the 5% vat and handling to pay (done a few minutes ago). Should be able to sort collection date and time tomorrow so all being well my baby will be home soon. EEK!

5% vat is a bargain I thought it would be a lot more than that....

So If I found a car for 10,000 say in the US.
VAT = 500
Shipping ? (is that end to end ?)
Anything else ?

How are they moving your car ? man grunting it ?

Owning one which is not running...

Yes that’s correct. As the car was made in the EU it’s duty paid so only vat applies, which is reduced to 5% on cars over 30 years old.

Basically there is

Buying the car
Transport to port
Shipping (Running cars can travel RORO roll on roll off which is cheaper. Mine came in a container so twice as much.
Marine insurance (optional)
Handling fee on arrival
VAT (5%) on all of the above

Now just need to fetch it! It will be ne t Wednesday when my man is bringing it here now. (£250) as I don’t have a tow bar to fetch it myself)

Also yes they pushed it on and off!

They use a forklift with an attachment that goes under the front wheels and move non running cars that way. I know because i picked mine up at felixstowe.

Also, towing the car may not be an option. When i got there i found all the tyres were cracked and flat so had no option but to use a flatbed vehicle (which is the option i took anyway). In the pictures from bhcc, the tyres all looked fine but that wasnt the case when i saw it in person. You also dont know if brakes have seized or anything either so its best you use a trailer/flatbed recovery.

Also, make sure its put on the truck facing forward or have the louvres secured down as the wind can easily rip them off and/or damage them.

Oh and have fun finding the yard. Its like a maze. When you do find it and you see your car for the first time, its a great feeling. Thats if youre going there yourself mind.

I thought that it was 5% on the purchase cost of the car, and standard rate VAT on the shipping and insurance costs?

if you pre book all of it with the shippers it’s 5% on all if it. Otherwise if you pay post shipping IE after it’s cleared HMRC - All are then landed costs at 20%

I have just paid all mine this week at 5%. Car will be with me on `Wednesday

Thanks for the feedback. It’s due to arrive here tomorrow and I haven’t finished my Mrs’s project in time to park it!
