OK - I was talking to a guy today who worked at the factory for another company, and he said "The chassis was built to accomodate 4 wheel drive". Does anyone know any more detail about this?

All I know about that is that this guy is totally wrong! The chassis in its current configuration would not support 4 wheel drive - the driveshaft would be going through the fuel tank area, not to mention the front shocktowers blocking access to the front hubs to connect driveshafts.
Not to say it couldn't be done, just not with a stock chassis...

Well, if not, he said it was definitely a project 'in the pipeline'...

Also consider the front and rear wheels being of a different size. AFAIK that'd be a first for 4WD.
The Renault 21 turbo quadra used a UN1 with viscous coupling hanging off the end to drive the rear wheels. In theory you could flip the diff and use one of these to drive the fronts via a propshaft and a diff with a higher ratio, but you'd have to do something with the gearshift linkage, the fuel tank and a fit the front diff in the middle of the front chassis section....

Well, DMC did have draft plans/design studies done on building the DMC-44, which was going to be a 4wd vehicle, but it would not have been based on the DMC12 platform.
Also, there was interest in DMC taking on the Lamborghini LM002 vehicle, maybe this is what the DMC44 would have been...

I guess if there was going to be a DeLorean 4x4, it would have looked a bit like this ...

The BTTF III car was on a VW beetle chassis (a la Dune Buggy)
It was rear wheel drive not 4WD sorry to spoil the illusion!
