The 1987 DMC 3.0

I have a few hobbies that keep me busy. One I like to build professional grade studio models (mostly sci fi space ships). Another one is I like to sketch out car designs (hand render for those in the CG world). My wife got me a Wacom Cintiq graphics tablet about 2 years ago andI have been sketching car designs out ever since (actually I have been doing this a lot longer, just with pencils and paper, not graphics tablets).

So a few months ago I sketched out a design for a second gen DeLorean. The idea was simple, if DMC was successful, then there would be a redesign in the near future especially since the DMC-12 was said to be out of style before it made it into production, (which we all know is just not true).

My self imposed task, envision what the second generation DeLorean would look like. I had to keep the design period correct (mid to late 80's) and try not to make it look dated at the same time. My first thought was to try and incoporate the underbody into the overall design. So the "side stripe" is actually exposed underbody which stainless panels overlay. So I ran with it and came up with this first sketch:

After putting it off for so long, I decided to finish her up last night. The "What If?" 1987 DMC 3.0

impressive design work, could you design it though with a better engine than they presently have, AND make them all automatic, because automatic is better!!!!!

Michael - that's genuinely top class work! Anyone would think you worked in professional automotive design?!

Good idea, that would probably halve the base price ;)

Thank you all! I have always liked to sketch car designs out. It was just fairly recently that I moved over to the graphics tablet. What used to take days now takes hours and I can make mistakes with no consequences. My tastes are a bit stuck in the 90's as far as styling goes (the classic wedge) but I try to keep up with trends.

One design came to me in a dream. I was at a test track and Audi was unveiling their new street legal track day car(much like the KTM Xbow). I woke up and sketched it out before I forgot then tweeked it until I nailed my design down. A few days later this was on my screen:

Liking the D and the bhp.
Not sure what your turning circle would be on the blue one though! 1/4 mile?

Looks like the Bugatti EB110 crossed with a McLaren F1 - you're right about being stuck in the 90s!
