Just to add...
I went to post office mid month and all seemed to go fine, but my direct debit tax payment still went out as usual in May.

I assume it will get sorted and credited back by June - fingers crossed.

I would have cancelled the DD myself.

I think then it wouldn't be taxed and you couldn't drive it in the interim?

Am also still waiting for my new V5C.... Twats!

As of april 1st, as long as you start the process on that day, the car is taxed. You would have got a receipt that would prove you had done it and you are allowed to drive the car whilst its all being processed. I did and my tax run out on the 31st march. I would have cancelled the DD myself prior to applying for historic to avoid being charged and faffing about with the DVLA getting a refund
or givingbthem any more money (granted its not alot per month anyway). Im not sure if you will be refunded for may or not though.

It took 4 or 5 days to show online via the gov tax checker site that my car was taxed and during those 5 days, i continued to drive my car

Yeah, its annoying as my car was already taxed, and I dont DD it. If I cancel the tax on getting back from the post office, but before I get a confirmation of a new V5, there will be a period where its technically not taxed. If its taxed, I can only SORN it, not "un-tax" it, and still keep it on the road.

I retained the slip from the v5, and got a photo of the PO-stamped old v% which they sent off, but thats it.

Sub-optimal.... Still, at least it will be the last time I tax it...

Ah i see your dilemma now. Bummer.

I set me car up to run out of tax 31st march ready for the switch over. I put the car on SORN (yes its mad that my car has been SORN) in march 2021 and took the opportunity to upgrade the whole front suspension area during that time.

A ha!!

From their website:

What happens after you’ve told DVLA

Your vehicle tax will be cancelled by DVLA. If you pay by Direct Debit, the Direct Debit will be cancelled automatically.

You’ll automatically get a refund cheque for any full months left on your vehicle tax. The refund is calculated from the date DVLA gets your information. The cheque is sent to the name and address on the vehicle log book.

So, we wait....! But the major part is done! Am very pleased!

Good to hear. Wonder if that cheque will arrive quicker than the V5?
