E10 Fuel

Hi everyone, as I'm sure you all know, E10 fuel is being introduced now and it got me wondering if it will do any harm to our cars? The stock fuel pump has a rubber pickup hose in the tank so I assume that could degrade over time? What about the bosch fuel distributor, isn't that full of rubber o rings? And how about the injector hoses themselves? A lot of us are running Julian's hoses which I assume can cope?

I am always a bit wary of ethanol as the inside of my tank was like tar when I first got it over from the states, and if my car is going to be sat for a while with fuel in the system I always make sure its got Esso Synergy Supreme+ 99 in it as that is 0% ethanol apparently.

I would be interested as well, my wife was telling me about this and I said I am sure it will be fine but they are fair points.

https://www.gov.uk/check-vehicle-e10-petrol

Alas the checker isn't much help.

But it does say

"If you're still not sure, use E5 petrol. It will still be available in the super grade at many filling stations."

Even E5 has some ethanol in it. That's why I try to use Esso Synergy Supreme+ 99 as much as possible and certainly if the car is going to be sat around for ages (quite often  ) According to Esso's website it has no ethanol in it at all. There are probably other makes that do 0% as well though.

Also just thought of the accumulator, that also has rubber in it and again this was something that was completely shot when I first got my car from the states.

Certainly any replacement fuel line will be fine, as these are made from teflon (stainless braided ones), or ethanol resistant rubber (fuel pump and accumulator flexible hoses - in most cases where they have replaced). Some original ones, I'm not so sure.
If you have a rebuilt distributor, the many o-rings in these would be made from Viton (FKM) so ok - possibly not so ok if on the original ones as these will be nitrile probably (not so ok).
Original and early replacement fuel pump boots were made from a type of rubber that doesn't fare well. Ed's new ones are made from polyurethane which is completely resistant. There are some hoses in the tank too, and replacements are made from FKM(Viton), originals probably not.
I don't know about the accumulator - but one would assume Bosch know to use Viton for the rubber parts now.

It’s quite easy to remove the ethanol from the petrol. Ethanol is hydroscopic so binds with water. The process is to add water to petrol, mix and then remove the bonded water/ethanol mix after it has separated from the petrol.

That looks like a hoot to do in the garage.... E10 on the left, Mixed in the middle, Purified on the right.....I wouldn't be dropping a match anywhere near his drains either.

In short, yes it will. It eats every piece of rubber it comes into contact with. Different vehicle of course, but I sell hundreds of carb & fuel tap kits for the bikes now (all caused by ethanol) & never used to sell them at all, ever!
The ethanol just eats all the rubber components & they fill the sump up with petrol while they’re sitting in the garage. Super unleaded is staying ‘as is’ so I’d use that, at least it’s 50% less shit than the new e10 is gonna be

But it can be done and does mean you fuel system won’t be damaged
