New DeLorean Specialist?

Evening all,

I've had this idea for a while and a few people have suggested I do it, so here's the idea;

Correct me if I'm wrong but as far as I'm aware, there are only two places to get work done on our cars in the UK; Chris Nicholson and Alex C, (Alex D for frames as well)
All three are on the East(ish) side of the country, which leaves nothing on the west side...

So why don't I start a workshop/garage specialising in DeLorean's (and MX5's :D ) in the Bristol area?
It would be fairly easy to get to from Wales and England which would open up options for all the owners in the valleys.

I need to gauge interest as committing to renting an industrial unit would not be wise if nobody would be interested in what I've to offer.

I can do:
Door adjustments! ...Carl Hammond, Yours could do with some more tinkering ;)
Engine tuning (not performance tuning, just getting it to run right)
pretty much all the mechanical and electrical parts on the car as well.

So please Let me know if this is of interest!

Miles.

I think you would need to tackle other jobs too like caliper and cv axle rebuilds, exhaust fitting, overhauling the suspension and front area etc to warrant getting a unit. This is also where youll likely need some kind of insurance too. If all you want to do is tweek doors and engine etc, you may as well travel to owners homes for a fee.

I plan on doing all of that stuff too, it's just a hell of a lot of things to list!
I'm also really fed up working at Halfords and would like to do something new.

You owe me door adjustments Miles ;)

Do whatever you do that makes you happy. You're at the age and commitment level to give it a go.

Careful that you don't limit yourself to specific marques, unless you want to specialise in that area, and think about future markets, like what the car scene may be like in 10 years.

It'll all be experience in the end, even if you document it all on YouTube, including the new business journey and garage development etc

Talking of where the car scene may be in 10yrs, there probably wont be much of one. Its clear the elite want us off the roads and only using electric, ubers and public transport. Maybe you might want to look into electric car maintenance

If you are gonna do it right make sure you have Public Liability Insurance. Also watch out for people trying to hustle you.

My Advice is go for it if you can. You're at the right age to do it mate. I still do bits from time to time but if you are gonna do it full time do the maths, check that the work is out there in your area and be open an honest with your customers.

I’m actually leaning toward disagreeing with that. My suspicion is that most of the normal garages will swap over to electric and eventually won’t do engines anymore.
There will still be classic cars that have engines and require work.

I agree with this, engine stuff is already difficult to do and not many people can and know how to do it right. Most shops don’t do anything else than hooking up their computer and using software to do everything.

The hard skills will die with the old generation… unless someone like Miles (who actually loves this stuff and has the passion for It) picks it up.

I for one, have done some work on my car but it can’t say I enjoy it, and to be honest (and especially for the biggest jobs) as soon as I found someone reliable that could save me the hassle (Chris and Alex) I didn’t hesitate to send it to them.

As others have said, I’d go for it, right age etc etc but yes, I’d make sure you do it right with all the legal stuff that’s needed covered.

There’s always time to go back to Halfords if this doesn’t work, so why not get started now.
