2.148 VED: classic vehicle exemption – The Government will extend the cut off date from which classic vehicles are exempt from VED by one year. From 1 April 2014 a vehicle manufactured before 1 January 1974 will be exempt from paying VED.

Brilliant !! .. Don't you just love the way the government is helping us all out !!

Maybe I should get some pre war shitter .. No tax or MOT required .. Then of course they were all built better back then so have to be safer and more environmentally friendly ..

Also hidden was the proposal to roll the date each year as originally intended, so only 7 years to go and the De will be tax free too.

I personally think its a bad idea to make pre 1960 cars MOT exempt. The roadworthyness is the responsibility of the owner, but not everyone is a conscientious VOSA level MOT inspector, and one mans idea of roadworthy is not the same as anothers.
Most people I know still have an MOT done, but it's not compulsory and has no legal status, but gives peace of mind.
Those that will benefit most are the classic car sellers, as they no longer need to get things fixed to sell a car on, and it really is caveat emptor.
I'm waiting for the first insurance claim to be refused on the grounds of the owner not having a roadworthy car, then the claimant suing the individual. It's bound to happen. For example if someone in a pre 1960 car crashed into your Delorean because their brakes were seized on one side or the pipes rusted through. The insurance inspector found out and refused to honour their insurance policy, so your insurance is left to cough up and sue the individual.
Great idea this MOT exemption is.....I'm not sure it's been thought through properly.

My D in Holland is Tax Exempt, but still MOT has to be done biannually.

None of the cars here in the State of Georgia have to be tested for any safety/roadworthyness item at any point in their life after being manufactured.

Just emissions in the Atlanta area for cars between 3-25 years.

Other states are different but I think FL is similar, a point to remember when you are buying insurance for that rental car in Orlando.

On the IOM there is currently no annual MOT for any car, regardless of age. The only time a car is inspected is when its imported to the island and only then if its over three years of age.

I have never heard of an insurance company refusing to payout on the grounds of the condition of the car. When I was involved in the shunt with Raff at no time was I asked if my car had any form of current safety inspection certificate.

If this where to become an insurance issue surely the insurers would simply write into the policy the requirement for an annual MOT or equivalent safety check. I assume they currently don't, I can't be bothered to dig out my policy documents and check but from a simplistic point of view the fact that I have the same policy with Adrian Flux as many of you guys but don't have an MOT and the policy is legal, assume its not a pre-requisite. Hence if its not a requirement it cannot be stated as a non compliance issue and used as an insurance 'get out'. The lack of annual testing is all part of the 'risk' the actuary places on the policy as is the fact that annual mileage will be lower and any car this old is more than likely a cosseted garage queen and not a daily motorway workhorse.

I've lost count of the number of cars and bikes I have owned. And I have never ever had one fail its mot, becuase I check it over and fix everything before taking it for the test. So to me the test is just another tax. But I know a lot of people do nothing to their cars and rely on it

The scary thing with our MOT is that it only tests structural cohesion. Nothing on drive train, engine leaks or electrical hazards. So i can basically explode, burst into flames and sparks, killing all inhabitants, but at least it wont damage the guiderails because it can roll straight.

Then people that buy a car thinks it's in a good condition because it has MOT.
