Now October is on us and the government has seen fit to change the laws on car tax, so when you sell a car you automatically get a refund for any whole remaining months and the onus is on the new owner to tax their new purchase. So now the government get double bubble as unless you sell the car on the last day of the month you lose and the new owner has to pay again...

What happens if you go round someone's house, pay cash, sign all the paperwork, then drive it away. Obviously you're not driving to the Post Office - how long do you get to tax the car? Surely there's a grey area period, certainly the time it takes for the seller to post the V5 document, but surely you're not expected to tax it within an hour? maybe a week??

You have to go online or use the automated telephone service which is 24-7

yeah but you're not going to get pulled until the seller posts the V5 and it's processed. That said, I'm not sure what the insurance position would be if you crashed during this period.

Wonder about exporting, when I buy a car in the UK to bring to the IOM I cannot 'renew' the UK TAX as I'm not a resident nor can I get TAX 24/7 or even in advance from the IOM Government seems like I'd be screwed!

I was listening to a guy on the radio the other day, he reckoned as a conservative figure, the government would make an extra 93 million based on how many used cars are sold each year.
