I put a kickstart on the little red 750 but this is almost useless as it won't start the engine from cold, and it just tries to kick me back.

But if you bump it from cold, the kickstart can start it once it's warm. Sounds awesome!

The last Commandos had a stronger longer kickstart, so I may fit one of those. Either way it needs a folding footrest.

So I got into the 650. It is distressingly rusty. I last rode it in 2003, and laid it up covered in waxoyl.

Wheel rims were never great, but now the primary drive cover, battery cover, side stand (I may put this onto the 750), Brake pedal, mudguard stays all will be getting a coat of por-15. It's not going to look very good though. I guess it needs a thorough restoration again.

It has a belt primary drive, running a later commando clutch. This is supposed to be better, and technically is, but needs at least one new plate- the first clutch plate has no friction material left. I may replace them all...

I robbed a few electrical bits for yet another bike, which I took to Skye in 2006, so these will need to be replaced. It lets me run without a battery, output from the alternator is converted to 12v dc. Kick it to start, so no storage necessary.

Cheers, hope it's ok to post this here. It's really useful for me! Take it down if not appropriate

It's not rust Andy, it's patina & according to Ebay makes it worth twice as much as if it was clean!
I likey, don't clean it too much, it looks perfect.
Get booked in for 2017 Dan & Mec, I'll be going again & Malc is coming too on this

Great idea!

All lovely pics!! That LC will be great on the island.

I will put some Por-15 just to protect the metal. I know what you ju, used is nice. The red one is shiny(ish), that's enough for me.

Here is the growly 750 in 2006. Camera phones have come on lot in 10 years....

Great stuff, that's goin through Kirk Michael, you just catch the car sales at the start of the vid.
It's one of the BEST places to watch from.
Fast boys go through there at 185mph at TT, proper narrow between the houses & shops & bumpy as foook

Yep, that's right Julian.

Last bit of treasure is this, which comes into the story as a few years ago I took bits from the silver 650 when I wanted to rewire the 500 and do away with the battery.

So now I will rob it back, and buy new bits for the 500.

It's a lot tidier than the 650, but has never been pressed into service for long journeys, bar a trip to Skye. The 650 has been round Europe a couple of times and over a good bit of the U.K.
