Not a question about the car but I've always wondered how Biff can give himself the almanac in 1955 then return to 2015 but not be in the alternate timeline that he created by doing this?

That's because the almanac changed the timeline in 1955 right upto 1985 when Doc & Marty discovered it (to everyone else it was reality) They then went back to 1955 and took the almanac back, so when old Biff returned to 2015 the time line had been changed already (back in 1955) The alternate timeline only existed/ran until 1985 when it was discovered and reset. That's why Biff is not sucessful.
