There are 2 'timing' marks on the crank pulley. The correct timing mark is when piston number 1 (ie the one that would be nearest the coil cover in the engine bay) is at the top and on the spark just after the compression stroke ie both rockers on cylinder 1 both not touching the valve tops ie you can physically wobble the rockers ant fit a dekker gauge in add though you were doing the valve clearances. The second timing mark on the pulley should be in roughly the 7 to 8 o'clock position when viewed from behind the engine as though you were looking at it from the back of the car with the bumper removed.

At the above point you should turn be able to fit the drill bit in so that it goes into the engine crank to lock it in place. This may involve moving the crank backwards and forwards slightly so you definitely get the bit in to fix it in place, confirmed then by not being able to move the crank at all by hand.

Once the above is done, adjust the timing mark scale above the pulley and the distributor timing mark, ideally such that the distributor adjustment hole that is around the stud is in the half way part of adjustment.

Thanks! What you’re saying totally makes sense, and is identical to what I’ve read online.

I can see a round hole when I light a flashlight through the hole. My concern is that this point appears to be past the tdc point of the piston, and in addition this position does not correspond to the existing mark on the timing cover.

Should I still have 100% faith in the hole?

You can check by sticking a pencil down the spark plug hole and watch this go to the highest point in relation to the hole to ease your mind. Ideally you'd use a dial gauge to be precise

Any of these holes?

Follow the engine part in the manual if you've got a copy. The hole is in the crank that would be underneath the access hole that is within the V part of the engine underneath the water pump

Use this hole to find TDC

That’s the hole I’m using. There’s a round, drilled hole in the crank counterweight similar to the ones visible in my last photo. When this hole appears when peeping through the hole, the number one piston is past tdc.

I swear. I have double and triple checked.

You all must think I’m a moron :D

I’ll check my other engine if it’s the same.

There is more than one hole in the crank counter weight I think, also make sure you are using the Delorean pulley and timing mark plate and not the Volvo ones

Also are you 100% sure you have put the chains on correctly, are they original chains with painted marks on the links? Or are they new without marks?
