The ad doesn't say anywhere that is was made by Ferrari. It lists it as a 'rare' Ferrari Red colour:
"Delorean 1981, ultra rare Ferrari red, 27k miles, excellent original car!!!"
EDIT: Oh I've just seen the categorisation

Interesting that this ebay.com ad for the same car has now ended, while the ebay.co.uk one is still on-going. Did the second guy buy it from the stpallas seller>
http://www.ebay.com/itm/1981-DeLorean-D ... 7675.l2557Is the UK seen as the lucrative marked for D's these days?
I think so.
Or else the ebay.co.uk one is a scam......

I think this Pallas guy is on to a winner. He is basically moving cars just to the UK, making money for nothing. One of our members bought a car from him recently, it's on the way over. It was previously on BHCC (for less!).

I am a newbie here but I just loved the red Delorean and fancy buying it to ship it back to Lancashire. Am I correct that they were never sold in a colour so this must have been done post sale? It's not a deal breaker as I still want it. Any other advice is appreciated. Can I assume if a purist bought it, he would remove the paint and polish it up? Brian

They were never painted at the factory, but some were "sold like that" as several dealers in the States had some painted, partially in an effort to invigorate sales.
Yes, you can strip the paint off and regrain the stainless if you so desire. The risk is that the paint was really applied to hide damaged bodywork which can turn out to be an expensive endeavor.

Hi, and welcome Pianola
Three cars were 'officially' painted by DMC in the USA in May 1981.
Vin 661 - red
Vin 667 - black
Vin 672 - yellow
The red one was stripped by its owner unaware of its history
Black one is in private hands in NJ
Yellow one whereabouts unknown.
Any other painted cars would be either painted by the dealer, or an owner.
As the learned Dermot says there could be damage underneath.
I have owned previously two painted cars, one which has been stripped by its new owner and no damage, another was almost stripped when I got it again no damage.
Due to the risk, painted cars usually fetch less.
I wouldn't worry about purists either, my black one gets more good comments than negative
