As soon as I connect the battery the buzzer constantly goes and the instrument panel is dead when the key is turned. Also in the third position there is no starter motor although you can hear the current drain pulling the buzzer down. Where do I start? I thought something was connected wrong which may be right as ther is 52 ohms across the positive and negative of the battery, obviously with it disconnected.

Without looking at it directly, the short could be where you have wired the 4 brown cables on that backplane on your coil arrangement.

Good luck.

OK without the alternator to starter wire I have no 12V supply in the car but with it fitted I have a short circuit to ground. There is no short circuit when it is not connected. Starter motor?

Also, could I use the green feed to the vacuum solenoid as my feed to the coil set up? I need a 12v supply switched by the ignition.

Have chased the short-circuit into the car. Trying to think of what I have disturbed as the short is on one of these

Options are

Fuse 6, 7, 12 , 17, 18
Dip beam relay
Main beam relay
Light switch
Door lock thermal trip
Fan speed thermal trip
Aux relays
Ignition switch

Weird, maybe the PO disturbed something or did you have it running before? Can isolate each circuit one at a time?

It turned over and everything before so can only think it is related to the frame off. Doesn't help that my relay/fuse compartment looks nothing like the diagram.

Also require an aux relay as one for doors etc is missing. I am replacing the circuit breakers with 40A in line fuese like Nick suggested.

Sorted out the short circuit but starter won't work with 12v at solenoid. Tried another starter and same thing. What is the tab on the internal of the solenoid supposed to touch? This car is frying my head!!!!!

Have you tried the starter off the car?

With key in position 3 you should get 12v at the red/White wire.
This supplies12v to the small tab at the 2 oclock position.
This then operates the solenoid and you should hear it clunk at least.
If it does it then supples 12volt by the big heavy current cables to the starter motor windings.

If you have had a frame off have you reconnected the earth cables?
One goes from battery negative post to the chassis to the trailing arm bolt.
The engine block earth cable to chassis is near the starter motor and is a big braided earth cable.

Just a thought. Since you painted the engine block did you leave that area so the cable has a good electrical connection at this point? Our TT had a starter problem and this was the cause, paint under the engine earth strap.
Try connecting a good quality jump cable between the negative battery post and the lifting hook on the battery at the top near number 3 cylinder [Near the accelerator cable adjuster] then try starting the car again. This is assuming the starter motors are both ok.

Good luck. I need to hear those carbs!!!!!!!!!!!

Tried all that Mr Bloke. Can only think the starter motors are both fooked. Dismantled them but everything moving free. The tab on the underside of the solenoid feed doesn't seem to contact anything though. What is it supposed to touch? I take it u can't see this with it dismantled.
