An update from Chris Nicholson on the VIN, P J Grady located several damaged/incomplete Wooler Hodec cars with original VINs in this range, apparently after a lot of searching.
As such this is a 1982 car and will be UK registered as such. I think he will be more publishing details at a later date.

Also stole another idea from Chris Hawes : swapping the vents and stereo around so that a pop-up screen can be used without blocking the vents. Much easier to implement with the dash already off!

Hi Starglider - whereabouts in London are you based? I'm in NW2, and if you want to have a go in my car then you're more than welcome... drop me a PM.

I've done most things that are possible to do to improve the handling (replaced all bushes, DPNW kit on ARB, strut brace, Ed's LCA supports, Spax shocks, DMC EU lowering springs, refurbed steering rack... I think that's it...) and am running a Volvo B28E with the UK stainless exhaust. You can hustle the car along at a fair old lick, but a modern boggo hatchback will show it a clean pair of heels as soon as you hit some corners.

So what determines if a VIN is "factory issued"?

I know most of the 81s have associated paperwork, shipping manifests, MSO's etc, but what of the later ones.

Say a barn find car turns up, in pristine condition with a pair of VIN plates that fall within the accepted ranges that we know about, but was previously missing (say 17011 to pick one off the VIN list) but it has no paperwork with it.

What if said car has plates from outside the usual ranges, say 14123, but again no paperwork.

How do you register such a vehicle? Whether the barn is in York or New York?

If your insurance can handle that, that would be great thanks; also would be good to have an in-person discussion about why you did your modifications.
Had a very useful chat with John Hervey recently about various kinds of DeLorean turbo upgrades and some historical things about the various vendors that I couldn't find online anywhere.

Still adding bits to this, didn't have any sills so got the DMCMW illuminated ones, didn't have a shifter boot so got the shift plate with illuminated logo to match (will put some padding around the shaft though), have a couple of ruggedised industrial USB3 hubs that we'll try to hide in the interior, wife requested heated seats (she always maxes the ones in my Allroad in the winter) so put them in etc. Still looking for calipers & rotors though.

Decided to go with the Lada-type split sidelight/indicator lenses; makes the front end look more busy but also more 'official UK version'. Since I'm using LEDs everywhere the simple 'wire marker earth to indicator power' trick for making the front markers flash won't work, but a couple of appropriately wired DPDT relays should fix that problem.

Have you actually got these? If so where did you get them from?

Chris N said he could get them, didn't ask where from, although I was thinking these ones should fit.
I also managed to track down one of those 'Handling by Lotus' badges (that are out of stock at DMCH etc); found a vendor in Malaysia that had a slightly newer style (by which I mean, 'more mid 80s looking') which I think looks neat.

You might want to take those off once you've actually driven it :D
