For anything else not specifically DeLorean related....

Yes for the moment.

The DVLA website crashed yesterday so hardly anyone could buy tax on line.

But even when everything gets linked up.....

"A copy of a presentation given by Home Office and police officials at a conference last week, seen by the Daily Telegraph, reveals that “automatic number plate recognition” (ANPR) cameras make errors when scanning four in every 100 licence plates.
In 27 per cent of cases the cameras mistake a number for a letter, such as a zero for an “O”. In 25 per cent the error is down to screws or bolts positioned too close to characters. In another 25 per cent it is caused by broken or damaged plates, while in 22 per cent dirt on the number plate leads to a reading error. ANPR cameras currently capture about 30 million individual images of licence plates each day, suggesting as many as 1.2 million may be read incorrectly.
The figures in the presentation were taken from a study of 20,489 vehicles on roads in Oxfordshire, Berkshire and Buckinghamshire by David Joy, an independent ANPR consultant and former police officer. "

I do work at a place called Roke Manor Research, a MOD establishment. ANPR was invented and developed by the boffins there along with missile targeting systems etc. They are constantly updating the system as technology advances, yet even when I visited last week and talked to some of the guys the latest ANPR devices were still not infallible.

Check out some of the stuff they do like "Gecko" on their website under technology... Far more interesting than ANPR

http://www.roke.co.uk/

Some day all cars, planes, boats and even your home , then a whole, town, city and the world will not have a single electrical wire. I've seen it in action and its amazing, Data transmission that travels over the surface of an object, jumps air gaps of 10mm and goes around obstacles.

I think it best to leave my cracked, dirty, misaligned bolt holed, non standard lettered number plate alone then ;)

Well it's a good job that we didn't invest in lots of "Delorean Club" tax disc holders !

I do like the biscuit :)

I've just SORNed my cars for the first time in 10 years. Only because it's just so easy now - just 3 clicks and I get sent a refund. So whereas I was previously paying £230 for the whole year I'll now just tax it for 5 months or so, saving £134.16. Times 2 because I've done 2 cars.
So whilst I may lose a month when I buy/sell, I'm gaining a lot more from the ease with which you can just tax and untax with a couple of clicks.

Plus I've just sold a load of tax discs on Ebay for £50!

So I think, whilst it probably harms the average user, the new system helps the classic car user. A few more quid in George Osbourne's pocket, but it's a thumbs up from me

I always used to do it in the old days too by posting the discs back to them using stamps I had steamed off old envelopes that hadn't been franked  ;)
