requesting a test drive

Postby bill.stroker » Thu Oct 01, 2015 9:57 pm

Hi Guy's, I haven't posted for a while, but I have been looking on the forum from time to time. I have been looking at Deloreans in the States and the pro's and con's of importing a vehicle to the U.K. Does anyone have any experience or expertise of importing a Delorean who could offer me some money and time saving information please? I am intrigued by banter on the forum between the transmission variations on the car, although I am leaning towards an automatic transmission car rather than stick if possible, only because I am used to driving an automatic vehicle, I hope I don't offend anyone.
I have currently been temporarily assigned somewhere else in the U.K. A little town called Bradwell on sea in the county of Essex. So I will be down there for the next 2 weeks at least. I am after a favor, Is any owners near Bradwell on sea or that part of the U.K. who would let me have a drive of a Delorean??? I would be very grateful. Regards Bill

Hi Bill
I bought my first DeLorean here in the uk and it is very much an 'up together' car. I must say that I was and still am extremely pleased with my purchase although I would have saved money by importing. There was always the benefit of being able to see the car in the flesh
Since then however I experienced importing cars from the US and although normally the purchase is made via photos and the sellers description I have had no bad experiences and have saved money.
Having purchased both ways I would recommend importing providing you are happy to take the slight risk ( this is normally minimised if you can find a genuine seller) and you are happy to wait for it to arrive.
Conversely, if you want to see the car and not have to wait then buying in the uk would be best
I am no expert but the process of importing is not all that difficult.
You will see a lot of banter regarding auto vs manual and that is all it is, it really is down to personal choice, my car is an auto as this is my preference and matches my daily driver and quite frankly I gave up lugging that clutch up and down years ago.
As for a test drive, I am sure that most owners would be pleased to take you for a spin but I am not sure about letting you drive if that's what you want
Do you know what sort of condition car you want and what your budget is? Obviously this narrows down your options.
I know that there is a really nice car for sale in Surrey, you can find it in the cars for sale section

Good Luck!

Hi Mike, Thank you for your reply. I know importing from the States is going to be financially better for me, but trying not to contradict my previous post, because of my work commitments and with the very little time I do have, I think I would be looking for a pretty good example to purchase right here in the U.K. so I can jump straight in it and enjoy driving it when I can. Another major factor is storage, I would need to keep it in a secure place and not on the parkway. I am only renting, and currently where I am hasn't got a garage, but I'm sure I can rent one of those as well. So really, I am at the mercy of any of you fellow owners who would let me test drive one of your Deloreans before I jump in and make a purchase, regards Bill
