Problem putting engine and box back in... Please please help

Postby clocktown64dd » Mon Oct 12, 2015 10:24 pm

Right, tonight I've put the engine and gearbox back into the car, I alligned the gearbox mounts which were already bolted to the chassis and slid the brackets on the box in and bolted them together. The engine mounts ( here's the problem) don't line up with the engine bits that are supposed to fit into the mount. The mounts were bolted to the chassis too and they were about 5-10mm away from the engine lining up. I then too the mounts off the chassis and boltwd them to the engine and lowered. Now the holes which bolt the mounts to the chassis don't line up either. The gearbox is fitted properly to the engine too 100%. Any ideas? Are the mounts handed?
Thanks!

I had the same problem. I take it you haven't renewed the gearbox mounts? I think its where the rubber on the new mounts are not distorted to the same degree as the gearbox mounts (if that makes sense). I found that I had to bend one side of the new mounts to make approx 10mm leading edge and bolt them to the chassis. Then using ratchet straps (pulling the engine towards the front end) and lever bars and a bit if brut force the engine popped into place. You will need to drift the mounts back into shape with a long bar and fit the studs.

Thank you very much I will certainly give that a try when I get home. I have renewed the gearbox mounts, do you mean you had to bend the bracket on the gearbox or did you bend the new mount? I was going to try putting a bottle jack in somewhere to push the whole lot forwards, I was going to try lever the engine into the mounts, but didn't want to damage it, did you have the engine mounts attached to the engine or frame when you done yours?
Thanks!

I had to bend the new mounts and jack the engine up and had straps pulling the engine towards the front of the car. The mounts were bolted to the frame.

If you zoom in on the photo you can see the marks on the mount where I had to persuade it back to shape. I know it seems a bit heavy handed but it was the only way. I really didn't what to put any pressure on the aluminum engine where the studs fit through. BTW have the studs in place at the time so they can line up with the slots.
